Top 5 (plus 1) albums of 2014

2014 is almost over, so I'm about to have one of my favorite countdowns, the albums of the year! This year, like every other year, was a blast for pop music. Those are five albums, plus one, that really blew my mind these past twelve months, and still do. Many releases were worth our attention, but those after the jump are my favorite ones.

5. Trouble In Paradise by La Roux

La Roux may have split up, but Elly Jackson released one hell of an album. Full of disco, funk, new wave some might say, sounds with a much warmer and sexier vibe. Standouts: "Sexotheque", "Tropical Chancer", "Let Me Down Gently", "Silent Partner"

4. Xscape by Michael Jackson

MJ may have past away five years ago, but his music and legacy still lives on. Xscape is the second posthumous album of his previously unreleased tracks, and the most decent one. A-list producers like Timbaland, StarGate, Rodney Jerkins and Darkchild contemporized eight of his tracks and the result is an album that you can hear at full length without pressing next. Standouts (if I have to choose): "Love Never Felt So Good", "Chicago", "Slave To The Rhythm", "Blue Gangsta"

3. Ultraviolence by Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey’s follow-up to the sudden success of "Video Games" wasn't as mainsream as we would've expected. But the next step of her evolving artistry doesn't lack glamour, men, drugs or sex at all. Basically it's a theme album, in every song Lana impersonates a different Americana persona. Standouts: "Ultraviolence", "Brooklyn Baby", "West Coast", "Money Power Glory", "Old Money", "Black Beauty", "Florida Kilos"

2. Cheek To Cheek by Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga has shown signs of her love for Jazz throughout her career, but with her latest project she dives into the genre at full speed! Her collaborative album with the legendary Tony Bennett finds the usually over-the-top singer slowing things down a notch and giving us one of the best albums of the year, maybe the best album of her career. Standouts: "Anything Goes", "Cheek To Cheek", "I Can't Give You Anything But Love", "I Won't Dance", "They All Laughed"

1. In The Lonely Hour by Sam Smith

It's the lonely-hearts club, as Whitney Houston, his idol, would've said. I can't believe this is really Smith's debut album. Not too uptempo, mostly melancholic melodies and vulnerable vocals, and a voice so deep and so authentic it gives me goosebumps. Standouts: "Money On My Mind", Stay With Me", "Leave Your Lover", "I'm Not The Only One", "Like I Can"

plus 1. Do It Again by Robyn & Royksopp

When Robyn announced that she will collaborate with her fellow-Scandinavian act Royksopp, the world wasn't really ready for what was coming. This one isn't much of an album, as it contains only five tracks, five little diamonds of contemporary music. It's a mini-album that's why it is a plus one on my list. Standouts: "Monument", "Sayit", "Do It Again"
