Top 5 (plus 1) albums of 2020

A year which was terrible in so many respects proved that music has the power to soothe us when stressed, pick us up off the floor when spirits are low and bring us together even when we are apart. It has been a sublime year for women in music, with the likes of Selena Gomez, HAIM,  Grimes, Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande making brilliant, genre-pushing music. There's also been plenty of disco despite the lack of a dance floor, with amazing releases from Róisín Murphy, Miley Cyrus and Kylie Minogue. Meanwhile trap and hip-hop music continued to break barriers with artists like Doja Cat and Megan Thee Stallion leading the charge. The best albums of 2020 proved that incredible new music, e.g. After Hours by The Weeknd or Love Goes by Sam Smith, will always make their way to our ears even in the toughest of times. These are the five best albums of 2020, plus one incredible EP.

After Hours από The Weeknd ή Love Goes από Sam Smith, θα υπάρχουν ακόμη και στις πιο δύσκολες στιγμές.

5. SAWAYAMA by Rina Sawayama

Rina Sawayama surprised the music world with her pop/R&B/nu-metal hybrid debut. It turned out to be one of 2020’s most striking and unique pop albums, the kind of risk-taking debut that gets you excited at what the artist behind it might come up with next.

4. folklore by Taylor Swift

Swift's surprise eighth studio album is an indie record which sees her collaborate with Bon Iver and The National's Aaron Dessner. Tay-Tay steps away from bubblegum-pop music and decorates her storytelling with myths and fairytales as her talent burns bright.

3. What’s Your Pleasure? by Jessie Ware

Ware's brilliant disco record gave everyone their groove back, even if they were only able to dance to it in their living rooms. On What's Your Pleasure? she fuses funk, disco and house, and creates a unique album that will go down in history as one of the greatest quarantine LPs.

2. Future Nostalgia by Dua Lipa

The English singer-songwriter's sophomore album confirms her as one of the most exciting pop musicians working at the moment. Future Nostalgia, which Lipa released to give fans something to enjoy in self-isolation, features retro funk beats and jazzy, Kylie-esque anthems.

1. Fetch the Bolt Cutters by Fiona Apple

Fiona Apple's electric fifth album is filled with that kind of rage that sits inside you and hollows you out as she sings about terrible dates, memories of bullying, sexual assault and the daily pains of just existing day after day. A true masterpiece that succeeds to bury all of that darkness under wry lyrics and often jaunty melodies.

plus 1. In A Dream EP by Troye Sivan

In a Dream, Troye Sivan's six-song sequel to Bloom, is an adventurous break-up record that explores indie pop. Across the EP, Sivan avoids the typical sadness of a pop breakup album in favour of the self-discovery that can happen in the wake of heartbreak.
